As much as I have always loved the idea of Emily as a moor wandering figure I also felt through Wuthering Heights that there was much passion, feeling and intelligence in her. I would never disbelieve the idea of Emily as intelligent and witty, and Anne, despite sometimes being mocked for her religious fervour, seems to have some wonderfully strong feminist ideas for the time. I am reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall at the moment, and I love the story of a woman putting up with the cruel gossip of a town to protect herself and child from an abusive husband. The preface to the second edition, with its defence against criticism that the novel is overblown and unrealistic show exactly the kind of scorn such a spirited defence of women's rights must receive. I love that Markham, while originally disliking the woman for her outspoken nature begins to warm to her intelligence, a trait he never praised highly in women before.Laura Morriganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16402692693911867276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7074545955842912793.post-49322488184304982262014-01-13T16:15:27.305+01:002014-01-13T16:15:27.305+01:00Ms. Miller writes, Charlotte tended to hide aspect...Ms. Miller writes, Charlotte tended to hide aspects of her personality from the public: ''Her humor, her passion, her energy and determination, her occasional sharp-tongued tartness were dampened whenever she felt she was on show. Even to close friends, the fire of her creative self remained hidden.''

Indeed I think that is key to understanding Charlotte . Her genius included expressing herself so often the full meaning is hidden to a cursory view . One needs to read her words a number of times and learn what words are important to her to get the full flavor . ...in a sense she always wrote in tiny books to conceal from the causal view

One is rewarded by the study .

I'm glad Charlotte's humor is mentioned because I think it's often over looked.
Her dry wit imo is hilarious Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05033117202223821117noreply@blogger.com
