From the Treasure Trove: Arthur’s pocket watch. This watch is inscribed inside the cover, ‘Presented to the Revd. A. B. Nicholls by the teachers scholars and congregation of St Michael’s Haworth Yorkshire May 25th 1853’. Nicholls left Haworth for a short time after Charlotte rejected his proposal of marriage.
Oh I love seeing this, thank you!.
BeantwoordenVerwijderenI loved how he wore it the rest of his life. . Circumstances were driving him away so it's well Arthur was given this impressive token of people's regard for all his work. Something one can hold in the hand . Arthur obviously treasured it. Eventually Arthur left England and the even church, but he never let go of the watch .
It says May 25...the next day, the 26th, was the day Charlotte found him sobbing at the parsonage gate and next day after that he left the village 6 am
When he received this watch, Arthur had no idea if he would to return to Haworth...in fact he may have thought it mostly likely he would not.
One has to wonder what his thoughts were over the years when he opened it to see the time. Because it didn't just tell the time, it also told a story .A story of love, loss and hope
