This is a blog about the Bronte Sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne. And their father Patrick, their mother Maria and their brother Branwell. About their pets, their friends, the parsonage (their house), Haworth the town in which they lived, the moors they loved so much, the Victorian era in which they lived.
This image shows the pebbles Anne Brontë collected on the beach during her final days in Scarborough, a place she loved. Anne died on this day in 1849, and was buried in St Mary's churchyard.
I can never get over the beauty of these stones. It's quite a window into her mind to look about the stones she picked above thousands of others
It's said Anne pales in comparison with her sisters. The mistake is to compare them . Anne was different from her sisters. They were early 19 th century romantics and she was of the 18th century ( I speak of leaning and influences ) They were for passion first , she passionately advocated reason to lead .
If one looks at Windfell Hall as a direct answer to Wurthing Hights , one can see the spirited argument between Emily and Anne on this point .
Anne was a Bronte and by no means did she lack mettle and spirit...she simply placed them in different areas . In sticking with a difficult job for years...by telling her sister Emily evil must be fought, not simply accepted . By dogged finishing her 2nd novel in spite of poor health , to ensure this message was sent out to the world before she left it. When Charlotte calls Anne " gentle" it's perhaps wishful thinking . Who after reading Anne's preface can doubt she was as fixed and determined as either of her sisters when she had a mind to be . She was a Bronte though and though.
I was looking at Wurthing Heights last night and if we really want to know these young women, we have so much to look at in the novels. Novels can be read on the surface, but looking at them more deeply , they are filled with choices a particular heart and mind makes . We lament we have little information about the sisters , yet there are seven treasure troves awaiting our investigation

Who can forget Anne's last words?
" Take courage Charlotte, take courage "
Anne had that in superabundance
