A School Progress Report for the Brontë Sisters

  1. We can see why Patrick wanted them in school. Plainly teaching them anything systematically besides sewing was beyond Aunt's power...and even so, the two eldest did not sew well! Apparently they were indeed untidy as Helen Burns was in Jane Eyre. CB already shows her habit of neatness

    We forget Patrick had a parish to run by himself at this point and his daughters had a trade to learn : governesses. They could be mere nurse maids like the Garr girls, but if they wanted the better paid and social position of governess, they had to go to school. Fascinating Emily could read and write well at 5 3/4s! ...so much for autism lol

    When next Charlotte went forth to a school , it was handled very differently. It was under the guidance and with the funds of her godmother,Mrs Atkinson, who sponsored CB in Miss Wooler's school . Mrs A knew about Miss Wooler's school because her niece, Amelia Walker had gone there. Even with this kind help, going back to any school was very hard for Charlotte . However once she settled at Miss Wooler's, Charlotte had great success scholastically and found two life long friends
