In Memoriam. Joan Quarm
Cultural and arts icon Joan Quarm died from natural causes on Dec. 28 in El Paso. She was 90 years old. (...)Quarm was a world authority for the Brontë Society, was named to the El Paso Hall of Fame in 2003 and to the Older El Pasoans Hall of Fame in 2009.Quarm studied at Redding College and Cambridge University. She taught at the progressive Summerhill School in Suffolk, England, directed by Alexander S. Neil. She moved to Portugal, where she taught at St. Julian's School near Lisbon.She was married to G. Harvey Summ, became a U.S. citizen, and moved to Washington, D.C.Later, she moved to Peru, where she taught for the American Council and met her second husband, Thomas A.A. Quarm. The Quarms lived in Kitwe, Northern Rhodesia, before moving to El Paso. (...)A memorial celebration of her life will take place at 2 p.m. on Jan. 15 at the Scottish Rite Theatre in Downtown El Paso.
